The traditional primary health care system in the Kaluveli bioregion is embodied in a ‘people’s health culture’. This culture is based on very effective and sound health practices involving 400 indigenous plant species.

For over 20 years, Ptichandikulam Bioresource  Centre has been actively involved in both the protection of the indigenous herbal knowledge and also in the provision of a living library in the form of indigenous herbal gardens and TDEF sanctuaries.

This work has been supplemented by the setting up of herbal databases, publication of educational materials, establishment of herbal dispensaries and kitchen herbal gardens and through the conducting of herbal health camps.
