Over 200 children and young people (5-20 yrs) from 20 schools came together for the inaugural Nadukuppam Environment Education Centre Art Festival.  Opened by local panchayat leaders  the students were joined by 30 regional teachers, 50 women from local self-help groups, volunteers from Pondicherry University and CERES,  Community Environment Park, Australia.

The festival started with a colourful  procession from Nadukuppam school to the village. Students carried  hand made signs made from recycled materials bearing environmental slogans.

Working with  teachers,  volunteers and the panchayat leaders the students erected a 100m-long banner which was painted during the afternoon.  The young people enjoyed the activity and some were excited to use paint and brushes for the first time.

The event aimed to raise awareness of the importance of ecological studies and environmental issues such as global warming, water and forest use. The local villagers and Department of Education commented on thier pride at the success of this exciting and colourful event.
